Barbie as Rapunzel is a story of children finding self worth and independence, and thereby growing into confident, competent, adults. The film follows the story of a lost princess named Rapunzel who lives far away in the forest in a big tower with her stepmother Gothel who treats her as a servant, but Rapunzel wants to be independent and wants to paint, which Gothel hates. My Initial Thoughts: I’m not sure what happened between the making of Barbie in the Nutcracker and this, but goddamn am I glad it did. It was released on October 1st, 2002. Barbie as Rapunzel is the 2nd Barbie movie.

While it’s still obvious that CG animated feature films had only been around for 8 years at this point, the animation isn’t horrible. While it is by no means perfect, or even close to the best Barbie movie put there, it is refreshing to see that instead of abandoning this project after the lack of success that was their debut film, Mattel instead stepped up their game and showed us that these films are worth caring about.5: Disney Princess Skirt Tutorial. That was a very nice touch considering the protagonist is an artist (also the horse’s name is Botticelli!).Rapunzel illustration, Rapunzel Barbie Magenta, rapunzel, purple, violet png 508x508px 265.07KB Teresa Superstar Barbie Doll Barbie as Rapunzel, barbie.Barbie as Rapunzel Apple TV. One thing I noticed was that bits and pieces sort of draw from Renaissance-era art which is actually the era this film takes place in. I’m all for stylized animation, but it can be jarring to see that design next to the literal Barbie doll playing the lead. Her head was just abnormally large. There is something to be said about the strangely cartoonish design of Gothel, however. Rapunzel was obviously the star of the show (after all she is the doll they’re trying to sell), but the Kellys (the little girls) also looked nice and no one really looked bad.Despite the fact that I knew this movie came out right on the cusp of the 2000s, I had to check to make sure I hadn’t been having a stoke when I’d learned that, because I could have sworn this plagiarized from the Disney Rapunzel film (the one that came out a decade later). Rapunzel discovers a secret tunnel beneath the tower and follows it into a whole new kingdom, where she meets a handsome prince. The Plot: It’s better than Nutcracker. A devious witch keeps gorgeous princess Rapunzel in a high tower guarded by a dragon. This was actually a complaint I had when I first read George Orwell’s, 1984. The book’s protagonist starts out already disavowing his loyalty to Big Brother, there’s no realization that the oppressive government is not the utopia it claims to be. Instead the story starts with Rapunzel already knowing her “caretaker” isn’t a good person and Rapunzel already has a desire to leave her captivity. As someone who has gone though something similar (see: religious evangelical cults started in the 1800s) I would have loved to break down the process of leaving the cult mindset and accepting truth. It would have been great to explore the crisis of faith that comes when this thing you’ve believed in your whole life suddenly turns out to be a lie. I would have loved to see Rapunzel’s realization that her “mother” wasn’t as benevolent as she had made herself out to be. In a modern twist on the. There is one main plot and two subplots, the main plot being “Rapunzel escaping her abusive mother” and the subplots being “The dragon Penelope trying to please her father whilst still maintaining her identity” and “The political feud between the kingdoms is growing worse”.I thought the main plot was okay. Still this plot line isn’t uninteresting. The difference between these two pieces of literature is that Winston still grows as a character, while Rapunzel doesn’t. This complaint disappeared before I had even finished the book, however. Penelope’s natural inclination toward nonviolence creates a problem, especially when coupled with her anxiety. In his mind, her only hope of survival was to be terrifying, and hopefully, eventually, more powerful than her master. He was Gothel’s slave and presumed that Penelope would follow him. He genuinely cares about her. She just needed a greater sense of self-affirmation. She was firm in her beliefs and passionate about what she cared about. This shows him that has daughter has grown just as strong as he wanted her to be, just not in the way he expected. This conflict is resolved when Penelope first convinces her father that Rapunzel is on his side, in doing so she exhibits her strong sense of loyalty, a trait her father admires. It’s probably a worse feeling seeing as she actually feels a sense of obligation to live up to her father’s standards while with Gothel it’s more about her personal safety. This in turn has led Penelope to fear her father, almost as much as she fears Gothel. Download oracle odbc driver 12cAs it turns out the whole conflict was orchestrated by Gothel to get revenge on the first king for not being in love with her. As a result there are regular raids on both kingdoms and the royal families are sort of in constant peril (I mean the 5 year old princess of the second kingdom almost dies at one point). There are two kingdoms, one thinks the other assassinated the infant princess, the other thinks the former was just picking a fight. It’s certainly where the most growth takes place. The feud was the weaker of the two subplots but it serves its purpose. I definitely like her more than Clara so there’s that. If she were a real person she would be either much more bitter or much more naïve but the writers at Mattel were still to scared to giver her any actual flaws so she remains perfectly pragmatic while also absurdly optimistic. Her love of painting works itself nicely into the plot and reflects her strong desire for escape. While she is a very static character, she’s likable and smart which makes her easy to root for. It carries out the theme of pacifism and trust nicely as well.Rapunzel falls victim to the previously mentioned problem: trying to be a role model, but also trying to be interesting. She was one of the best things about this movie. As story progressed Penelope grew as a character and I actually started to relate to her a little bit. She started out annoying and I didn’t really realize why Rapunzel kept her around (I later realized Rapunzel was probably starved for some sort of companionship so anything that wouldn’t rat her out to the resident witch was probably welcome). She’s intimidating at first but her crappy aim in the climax takes it back a notch. Most of the guys I reject just call me a whore, she took it to much higher level. She liked the king but he didn’t like her back so she stole his baby and tried to start a war with a neighboring kingdom. 9/10The prince was boring. He was interesting, dynamic, and his voice actor did a great job. 2/10Penelope‘s Father was great and he has a wonderfully depressing backstory. Penelope on the other hand starts out a mess and has to understand her strengths and gain a firm grasp of her identity. She’s confident and she knows what she’s good at. Rapunzel has this covered from the beginning. Its a little basic, a little cliché, but it’s consistent and allows for character growth so I’ll give it a pass.Self actualization is also a prominent theme. At least they tried to keep it similar to the setting’s time period. The dress itself is kind of meh but I’ve never been one for 1600s fashion. The transformation scene is so creative and I love the animation on all of it. Again, no human female characters of her age to interact with so we can’t be sure. The romance isn’t amazing, I actually liked it better in Nutcracker.
